Obituary for Bert Jay Garvin

Garvin, Bert Jay, 45, passed away Thursday, March 6, 2014 in Yakima, WA. He was born December 2, 1968 in Wichita, Kansas to Sylvia Kurtz and Dave Rumley. While traveling with his mother, an active duty nurse for the United States Army and his adopted father William Garvin, they finally resided in Security, Colorado where he graduated from Palmer High School. Bert joined the Army in 1991 at the age of 23. During his military career, he traveled to Thailand, Kuwait, Hawaii and numerous deployments to Afghanistan. He was a very accomplished soldier holding numerous good conduct medals, ribbons and badges including the Bronze Star medal, National Defense Service medal with Bronze Service Star, Army Accommodation medal, Combat Action badge and Sharp Shooter badge. His many certifications and special training in truck driving and mechanics school, air assault training, secretarial school and was certified as an EMT. At the time of his death, he was an active duty MSGT for the States Army Reserves. Throughout Bert's life, he expressed a great passion for music although he enjoyed listening to all types of music, his favorite being rock and roll. Bert leaves behind to cherish his memory: parents, Sylvia and William Garvin; biological father and step-mother, Dave and Elizabeth James Rumley; fiance Alonza Kelly and their unborn daughter; daughters, Rebecca Carey of Utah, Charisma Nazworthy of Iowa; son, Matt Garvin of Utah; sister, Carolyn Garvin of Colorado; brother, Cary David Rumley of Arizona; numerous aunts, uncles and many friends. He is preceded in death by his grandparents Ray Kurtz and Carolyn Lohkamp. Funeral service: 1pm Wednesday, March 19, 2014, Smith Mortuary, 1415 N. Rock Road, Derby. Military graveside to follow in Mulvane Cemetery, Mulvane, Kansas.
