W. Maurine Sutton

Winowa "Maurine" Sutton, of Derby, Kansas, passed away on August 15th, 2026, at the age of 92 after a short illness.

Maurine was born the daughter of Lester and Gladys (Hadley) Neumann on June 25th, 1934.

On July 3rd, 1953 she married Athol Sutton in Bernalillo, New Mexico. They had four children; Robert, James, Bruce, and Matthew Sutton.

Maurine was born and grew up on a small farm in rural Greensburg, Kansas. She attended a small country school and graduated in 1952 from Mullinville High School.

She enjoyed helping her dad work on the farm and enjoyed the outdoors and farming. Many of her childhood recollections were stories about farming and working with her brother Kenneth. Her love of the outdoors continued as she enjoyed yard work, her many flower beds, and raised a vegetable garden for many years. Sitting on her front porch and reading a good book was also one of her favorite pastimes.

Athol and Maurine loved camping. The family remembers many camping trips with her sister Linda, and her husband Jim, and Athol's brother, Bob, and his wife, Edna. The Salt Plains and Table Rock Lake were some of their favorite places to camp. They enjoyed the annual week spent at Table Rock Lake with the children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Maurine was no stranger to hard work. She worked at the Derby High school cafeteria for over 35 years. She received numerous awards for her hard work and dedication. She made many friends that stayed in touch with her until her passing.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Athol; parents, Lester and Gladys Neumann; brothers, Walter, Kenneth and Richard; and sisters, Bertha, Ellen, and Mary.

Surviving members of her family are her sons, Robert, Jim (Teri), Bruce (Kristy) and Matthew (Debbie) Sutton; her sister, Linda Dunham; along with numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren; and one great, great, grandson.

Visitation is Sunday, August 23, 2026, from 2-4 pm. Funeral service is 10:00 am Monday, August 24, 2026, both at Smith Family Mortuary, 1415 N. Rock Rd., Derby, Kansas 67037. Interment will take place at 2:30 pm on Monday following the service at Hillcrest Cemetery in Mullinville, Kansas.
