William Victor Mayfield

October 9, 1937 — July 28, 2011

William Victor Mayfield 4th, known to most people as Jerry Mayfield, was born at University State Hospital in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on October 9, 1937 to William Victor “Bill” Mayfield, Jr. and Avis Rae McDowell. He passed away on July 28, 2011 at St. Francis Hospital in the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice Center in Wichita, Kansas at the age of 73. His father worked for the Daily Oklahoman living in various cities around the vicinity. Jerry had also worked for the Oklahoman. The family moved to Del City until 1954 before moving to Wichita. Jerry then worked for the Wichita Beacon, now known as the Wichita Eagle.

Jerry met Lois M. Sears and the two were married on November 16, 1958. He worked for Mid Central Fish and Frozen Food at that time before returning to the Daily Oklahoman moving to Enid, Altus and then to Hollis, Oklahoma. In January of 1963, they family moved back to Wichita where he has lived since. He said this was the last time he was ever moving again.

As his children grew and started school, he became involved with the Boy and Girl Scouts, little league boys and girls softball program and various school activities.

In 1975, Jerry went to work for LeFebure Corporation as a service technician. He installed anything that handled money. He had to retire in 1995 due to arthritis in his knees, elbows and hands. He enjoyed boating, camping and traveling after his retirement.

When Jerry reached the age of 65, he went back to work for The Mental Health Association until January 2011.

Jerry and Lois had four children. Two of their children preceded him in death-- Alisha Marie Mayfield Armstrong Stenzel who died in 2007 and Forrest Ray Mayfield who died on a cruise ship coming back into Florida in 1983. Surviving Jerry is his wife of nearly 53 years, Lois; daughter Madeia Ann Mayfield and son Douglas Eugene Mayfield; grandchildren, Robyn Maria Armstrong (daughter of Alisha), Forrest Victor Mayfield (son of Madeia); great grandchildren, Jadyn Aniyah Brown and Jaxen Lee Ervin Brown (children of Robyn), Katie Ann Mayfield and Dax Mayfield (children of Forrest V); uncle Jim McDowell and aunt Laura Steelquist. Viewing will be held from 1-8pm, Thursday, August 4, 2011 at Culbertson-Smith Mortuary, 115 South Seneca, Wichita. The family will greet friends from 6-8pm that evening. Graveside services will be held on Friday, August 5, 2011 at White Chapel Memorial Gardens, 1806 N. Oliver, Wichita, Kansas. Memorial donations may be made to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, 313 South Market, Wichita, Kansas 67202.
