Bill was born in Georgia, but his family moved to North Carolina at only 6 months old. When growing up, he acquired the nickname of “Piggy”….. sorry Dad. At the age of 19, he enlisted in the Air Force and served 4 years. While stationed at McConnell AFB, he met and began dating Shirl Chatwell. After being honorably discharged, Bill returned to his home in North Carolina, but after 2 weeks decided he could not live without Shirl and called to propose.
They were married on June 2, 1955 in Wichita, KS. Dad took his bride back to North Carolina to live. Bill worked at Rex Mills and was encouraged by Buddy Payne and Clarence Morris to surrender his life to Christ, which he did for the rest of his life. Bill and Shirl had 2 children, Dale born in 1956 and Loree Lynn born in 1958, born in North Carolina. The family returned to Wichita, KS in 1963 where Bill worked at McConnell AFB Commissary as a meat cutter, then becoming Meat Market Manager and retiring in 1991. Despite his many responsibilities, he always made time for his family and his passions.
Bill and Shirl have 9 grandchildren and 14 greats.
Bill loved Christ, his wife and his children. He left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
His hobbies were fishing, hunting, and traveling to gospel singings with their camper in tow.
In his later years, he loved encouraging others by telling them to “Stay Close to Jesus”, and he lived it himself.
In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Samaritan’s Purse at P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607-3000; a cause close to Bill’s heart.
