Virginia Houck

Virginia R. Houck (Mathews), passed away peacefully at age 91 on May 7, 2018, with family members surrounding her with love, hugs and kisses. She was a World War II military wife, farmer’s wife, dedicated mother, and retired beautician in the Wichita area.

She was a resident of Westview of Derby for the past five months, with Good Shepherd Hospice providing additional attentive care during her last few weeks.

She was born March 21, 1927 in Kingfisher, Oklahoma. She was married December 24, 1944 to Wilber Houck, and lived in Kingfisher and Crescent, OK, before relocating to Derby, KS in December 1962. They had five children, the first daughter passing at 4 months in 1946.

Virginia was known as ‘Grammy’ by her family and famous for her Sunday meals and family get-togethers. She enjoyed reading, dancing, music, camping with her family, mowing her yard and gardening.

In her later years she greatly enjoyed watching Lawrence Welk, figure-skating, and “Dancing with the Stars.”

She was preceded in death by husband Wilber, daughter Patricia, son Steve, two grandsons Darren Watts and Paul Watts, her parents, and two brothers.

She left a legacy of love through four-generations of family and is survived by son Terry (Carol) Houck of Derby, KS, daughters, Lexy Luff of Haysville, KS, and Anita (Mike) Stuhlsatz of Derby, KS, 11 grandchildren, Tamara (Richard) Watts-Westberry, Sam Watts, Shane Watts, Mike (Kristen) Stuhlsatz, Jeff Weyer, Jaime (Albert) Kralicek, Steve Burke, Michelle (Adam) Valentine, Shannah (Brett) Franklin, Angela Stuhlsatz (Patrick Treptow) ; honorary granddaughter Danielle (James) Wise; 31 great-grandchildren; more than 20 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday May 17th, 2018 at 10:00 am at Smith’s Mortuary, 1415 N. Rock Road, Derby, KS. Graveside Inurnment with family at a later date at Oakland-Knowles Cemetery, Crescent, OK.

In lieu of flowers a donation in Virginia Houck’s name to Alzheimer’s Association or Good Shepherd Hospice.
