Velda Ione (Marquardt) Satterthwaite, 93, went to be with her Lord on April 6, 2021. She was born October 20, 1927 to Fred and Fern Marquardt in Rosalia, Kansas. She was their youngest daughter. She graduated from Rosalia High School as Valedictorian in 1945 and earned her Associate’s Degree from Butler County Junior College. Velda married Melvin Satterthwaite on July 16, 1949. The following year Mel was shipped out to Korea. They moved into Wichita in 1952. Velda was involved in the school, Scouting, and sports efforts of her sons. She was a homemaker and worked as a secretary in the United Methodist Conference offices. Velda loved her family and helping others. She served in the Kansas Civil Defense and helped raise funds for various organizations. She did a lot of good for a lot of people. Velda and Melvin enjoyed traveling, researching for genealogy, and visiting family. They were longtime members of West Side United Methodist Church where Velda was a librarian, wrote the newsletter, and taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She was an artist and painted numerous portraits and nature scenery. She loved learning new information about history, art, and nature and the environment. Velda is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Melvin; sisters, Opal Van Wey and Vera Unruh; brothers-in-law, Max Satterthwaite, Gilbert Wells, Raymond Unruh and Richard Van Wey. Survivors include her sons, Rex of Bentley and Scott (Mary Anne) of Topeka; granddaughter, Lisa; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Wells and Jolene Satterthwaite; and several nieces and nephews.
