Steven James Norman, 61, passed away on Monday, October 20, 2025. He was born on July 7, 1964 in Lincoln, Nebraska to William David and Burnette Rita (Brandewiede) Norman.
Steve and his family moved to California and lived on Edwards Air Force Base in 1965 then went to Beale Air Force Base in 1967. The family returned to Derby, Kansas, in 1969 where Steve resided until his father’s passing in 1985. Steve became a resident of Starkey, Inc. and was part of their community, which serves people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), for forty years. Starkey helped him work, live more independently, and actively engage in their community.
From a young age, Steve had an intense interest in wrestling, working out, and listening to music. He enjoyed a friendly conversation, loved his birthday, family reunions and cookouts. Steve’s favorite activities were going on mini tours sponsored by AbilityPoint, a non-profit organization with a mission to make a difference in the lives of individuals and families living with IDD. Steve especially loved Camp Ability and attended every year until he was no longer able.
He is survived by his three brothers, Michael Norman (Tammy) of Mulvane, Kansas, Timothy Norman (Cyndi) of Elgin, Illinois, and Gerald Norman (Wendy) of Rochester, Minnesota; eight nieces and nephews: David Norman, Jes Adams, Samatha Morgan, Riley Norman, Katie Norman, Lizzy Norman, Zoe Norman, and Emma Norman; also six great nieces and nephews: Jazmin Adams, Joshua Adams, Bjorn Norman, Hudson Morgan, Hayden Morgan, and Margot Mclandsborough. He was preceded in death by his parents and great niece and nephew (twins) Adira Adams and Alfred Adams.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at Smith Family Mortuary in Derby, Kansas. Visitation with the family and optional viewing in the State Room is set from 9:00am to 10:00am prior to the funeral service. Pastor Bryan Jones is officiating. Interment will follow at El Paso Cemetery, where Steven’s body will be laid to rest next to his parents. Steve will always be missed and never forgotten. He held a special place in so many hearts.
