Steven McConnell was born March 19, 1957 at William Newton Memorial Hospital, Winfield, KS, to Charles and Betty Jean McConnell.
Steven grew up in Wichita, KS until the family moved to Germany for military assignment in February 1965. Before moving, he sant in the choir for the dedication of Century II in Wichita. While in Germany, Steven was able to see many of the sights of Europe, including Berlin, Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels, Salzburg, Copenhagen, Munich, and others.
Upon returning to the U.S., Steven attended schools in Wichita, Las Vegas, NV, Tucson, AZ, Fairborn, OH, and Fayetteville, NC. He graduated from 71st High School in Fayetteville.
After high school, he went to college at Kansas State, receiving a degree in Physical Science. While at college, he was enrolled in the Air Force ROTC program and upon graduating, was commissioned at 2nd LT in the United States Air Force on August 1, 1980.
After his technical training, Steven was assigned to the Cheyenne Mountain Complex in Colorado Springs, CO as an Orbital Analyst. His job was to track and monitor objects in orbit around the Earth, with the main objective of tracking Soviet satellites.
After four years, Steven left the Air Force and began work with a company called Infotech as an instructor, teaching Air Force students the orbital analyst skill. He later on held several other jobs.
He came to Rose Hill on February 13, 2023 and resided at Advena Living at Fountainview until his passing on February 1, 2025.
Graveside services will be held 1:00 pm Monday, February 10, at Highland Cemetery in Winfield, KS.
