Shirley J. Armstrong, 90, of Derby, Kansas, passed away on June 29, 2026, at Regent Park Assisted Living in Wichita, Kansas.

Shirley was born on December 22, 1935, to Eldon and Katie May Rushing in Carbondale, Illinois. She dedicated much of her career to working as a legal secretary and proudly supported her husband throughout his military career as an Air Force officer's wife. She was an active member of Officers' Wives Clubs wherever they were stationed.

A member of Woodlawn United Methodist Church, Shirley enjoyed volunteering at the church and giving back to her community. She also loved playing mahjong, creating beautiful wheat weaving crafts, and spending time with family. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren and making memories with those she loved.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband and life partner, Dwight Armstrong; her twin sister, Sharon Desborough; and her step-grandson, Ben Fleming.

She is survived by her children, Bruce (Carol) Armstrong of North Carolina, Brenda (Randy) Fleming of Haysville, Kansas, and Brian Armstrong of Olathe, Kansas; her grandchildren, Brady, Gabrielle, Mackenzie (Adam) Buck, and Daniele (Shawn) Marlatt; and her beloved furry family members, Leo, Duke, Cooper, Bentley, and Molly.

Gathering of friends and family on Friday, July 3, 2026 from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Smith Family Mortuary 1415 N. Rock Rd, Derby, KS 67037.

Shirley will be laid to rest at Galum Presbyterian Cemetery in Pinckneyville, Illinois on Saturday, July 11, 2026 at 10:00 AM.

Memorial contributions may be made to BreakthroughT1D or Good Shepherd Hospice in Shirley's memory.
