Sarrah Vaught

March 1, 1925 — February 2, 2022

Sarrah Ellen Vaught always said she wanted to live to 100. At just a month shy of 97, she died peacefully at home in her sleep Wednesday morning. She will be remembered as a strong, tenacious woman.

Sarrah was the youngest child of Ray and Anna McCullough. She was born on March 1, 1925 in Hartford, Kansas. She attended school through the 8th grade and helped on the farm before marrying John Carl “Jack” Vaught in Cottonwood Falls on November 2, 1940. They made Haysville their home in 1952 and raised their four children together.

Some of the Haysville community may remember Sarrah as the Safety Patrol Lady. For a number of years, she trained and managed students from Nelson Elementary to help other students cross the street safely.

Sarrah was a dog enthusiast and spent several years breeding and showing Dachshunds through the AKC. Over the years, they had many dogs from mutts to champion show dogs; she loved them all irregardless.

Sarrah was a gardener, a seamstress, a crafter of all sorts (quilting, doll and stuffed animal making, crocheting, knitting), a baker, and a collector of many things!

Sarrah also was a member of the First Baptist Church of Haysville. She enjoyed attending Sunday School and singing in the choir before becoming homebound. Because of her faith in Christ, we are assured we will see her again one day in Heaven and are joyful for the reception that surely met her.

Besides a few years spent out of state for Jack’s work, Sarrah lived in her home in Haysville for an amazing seventy years. Thanks to her daughter, Sally, and her husband, Richard, Sarrah was able to stay in her home for the last year despite her medical condition.

Sarrah was preceded in death by her husband Jack, son John Carl, and granddaughter Michelle. Left to cherish her memory are her daughters Sally Munson (Richard) of Caddo Mills, TX, Sue Hubbard (Richard) of Colorado Springs, CO and Ruth Watkins (Roy) of Williford, AR; seven grandchildren, many great grandchildren, and even nine great-great grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews and their families.

All are invited to celebrate her life on Thursday, February 10th at 1:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Haysville. Viewing will be that afternoon from 3:00 p.m to 6:00 p.m at Smith Mortuary in Derby. The burial service will be February 11th at 11:00 a.m. at Lakeview Cemetery in Wichita.
