Sally Sue Sutton-Smith

March 22, 1939 — August 18, 2023

Sally S. Sutton Smith (Johnson) 84, died Friday, August 18th, 2023. She was born March 22nd, 1939 and preceded in death by her mother and father, Anola (Pat) and Frances Johnson. Sally grew up in Wichita, KS, graduating from East High School in 1957.

She married Richard Smith in 1958, when Richard joined the Air Force. They had three children, Russell, Randall and Janice and were living at Randolph Air Force Base, in Texas. In 1965, Richard’s B-47 Aircraft was shot down in South Vietnam and he was declared missing in action.

Sally moved back to Wichita, KS, with her three young children. She waited for word on her missing husband while caring for the little ones.

Through the years that passed, Sally sacrificed the fun times of a young adult for the care of her children. In 1985, as the children became adults themselves, Sally met and married Wayne Sutton. Sally and Wayne had many adventures, including travel and buying a cabin in Colorado. Sadly, after only 5 years of marriage, Wayne passed away.

Sally continued to be a very positive person. She was blessed with several grandchildren and great grandchildren. She eventually moved to the area of Dexter, KS, with her daughter Janice. They lived in Janice’s beautiful log home, on a large piece of property in the country. Sally enjoyed watching the deer, bobcats and other wildlife in the area.

Within her final decade, Sally began having medical issues that forced her to move out of the log home she loved. She lived for a few years at Cumbernauld Village, in Winfield KS. She had many friends there and enjoyed lots of activities. While she was on a short stint in the hospital in Winfield, Covid broke out at Cumbernauld and she was forced to find another temporary place; Villa Maria in Mulvane, KS. After being there for a couple of months, she decided to stay. She quickly became friends with several others there. She enjoyed the activities and loved watching the birds at the feeders by her window.

Sally is survived by: children Russell Smith (Mulvane), Randall Smith (Dexter) and Janice Smith (Dexter), 4 grand children and 9 great grandchildren, all living in Kansas.
