Robert May

December 30, 1931 — September 18, 2019

Robert Wallace May left this earth peacefully on Wednesday, September 18, 2019. The fourth and youngest child of Roy and Amy May, Bob was born at the family farm in Lyons, Kansas on December 30, 1931. Growing up in Hutchinson with his siblings, Cleo, Betty, and Ed; life following the Great Depression provided many lessons that would benefit Bob his entire life. While working at the Dillon’s store on Plum Street, Bob met Elizabeth Ulmer. Bob and Liz were married in 1952 just before he left to serve in the Army during the Korean War. They liked to joke that they stayed married for so long because they were apart for their first year of marriage. After Bob returned home, he attended Kansas State Teacher’s College of Emporia, graduating in 1958. While his first teaching position was in Mulvane, the majority of his teaching career was at Enterprise Elementary School in Wichita. Not only a dedicated educator, Bob was a great dad to Lisa, Robert, and Chris. He was active as a 4-H Leader, involved in church activities, and supported the kid’s other clubs and events. Bob loved to be outside in his garden, walking, or fishing. This was good practice for his favorite title: Grandpa. He was always up for a concert, ball game, or enjoying time together with his seven grandchildren. Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth; parents, Roy and Amy May; brother, Ed May; and his sisters, Betty Smith and Cleo Kornelson. Survivors include his sons, Robert W. May (Tammy) of Wichita, Chris May (Jeanette) of Peck, daughter, Lisa Brose (Jeff) of Fort Collins, CO; grandchildren, Christian May (Melissa), Zach, Natalie, and Nathan May, Katie, Audrey, and Austin Brose; and his lifelong friend, Gerald “Jerry” Sanderson. A visitation will be held on Sunday, 1 – 8 on Sunday, September 22, with family receiving friends from 5 – 7 pm, Smith Mortuary, 501 SE Louis Blvd., Mulvane. Funeral service will be held 10 am Monday, September 23 at Council Hill Christian Church, 1268 N. Seneca Road, Peck. A memorial has been established with Council Hill Christian Church, 1268 N. Seneca Road, Peck, KS 67120.
