Derby

Richard “Rick” W. Lane, 76, of Derby, passed away Sunday, August 16th at the Kansas Medical Center of Andover.

Rick was born May 3, 1950, in Jackson, Tennessee, to Alvin and Sue (Cantrell) Lane. He was reared and educated in Nashville, graduating from Lipscomb High School in 1968 and continued his education at Tennessee Tech University, the “MIT of the South”. He served in the United States Army Reserves for eight years. Later, he attended Friends University and received his master’s degree in management. Over the course of his career, he worked in the capacity of mechanical engineer and operations management at various companies including Aladin Industries, Baird Ward Printing, Rubbermaid, and Syroco. He retired from Sherwin Williams in 2015.

He married Kathreen “Tink” Horner, the couple had two sons Matt and Ryan and were later divorced. Rick married Rebecca “Becky” L. Majher in 1996. The couple lived in Arkansas and New York before returning to Kansas in 2007.

Rick enjoyed fishing with his brother-in-law, Dick Phillips, and friend, Randy Giltner, working with gadgets and thing-a-ma-jigs, and fixing just about anything that was broken. He took pride in caring for his lawn, enjoyed stimulating conversations, debating current events, and simply talking with people. Rick never met a stranger. He cherished time with his family, and the laughter that always seemed to fill the spaces between conversations. He especially loved being Poppa Rick to his nine grandchildren. Nothing made him prouder than watching them grow, celebrating their accomplishments, and creating memories together. Whether on an everyday afternoon or a family vacation, the time he spent with them was among the greatest joys of his life. He also enjoyed camping, hiking, and traveling to many different places with his wife and extended family.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Derby, and various other “Houses of God” he attended throughout the years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, in- laws Mel and Ardelia Ferris, and a sister-in-law Catherine “Cathy” Creighton.
