Colorado Springs, Colorado – Ramona May Elinor (Black) Phipps passed away Sunday, March 8th, 2020. She was born December 24th, 1929 to John and Rachel (Smith) Black in Wichita, Kansas. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Bill D Phipps; parents John and Rachel Black; brothers Theron, Gale, and Ronald Black. Survivors include sons: Darrell (Kathie) Phipps formally from Moundridge KS now in Neosho MO, Robert (Kathy) Phipps of Colorado Springs CO, and Roger Phipps of Acworth GA; sister Kathleen (Black) Ritchie; grandchildren Chadwick, Ryan (Ali), Derek (Aimee), Joshua (Cata), Brandon (Kylie) Phipps, Kristen (Joseph) Maydell, Robert and Richard (Lauren) Heaston; 16 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.
Ramona was a longtime member of Westside church of Christ in Wichita, and then Northside church of Christ in Colorado Springs. She retired from the Harvey County and Sedgwick County Tag Offices of Kansas.
When people talk about Ramona the most common word describes her as a "sweet lady".
She always seemed to remember all the family and church member's birthdays, especially the great grandchildren. When she found out it was a child’s birthday at church, she would slip them a dollar bill for their birthday. For years, she would have candy in her purse that she gave to children at the church building . In her room, she always wanted to have bite sized chocolate candy bars to give to the children when they came for a visit, she would have the biggest smile to greet them. Even when we shared pictures with her she would react with such happiness.
Whenever she was able to see any baby it brought her such joy and laughter. She always wanted to send a baby gift when there was a baby shower for women at church.
She loved desert. If her meal didn't appeal to her, she would always be interested in desert, especially chocolate. Her favorite cake was German chocolate cake so that is what she had for her 90th birthday. She always wanted to send gifts to family members on their birthdays and at Christmas time. Even when her congestive heart failure made her weak and her shoulder was causing her pain, she tried to be pleasant and engaging in conversation when people would visit.
The main thing she would talk about was her family (great grandkids), her favorite sports teams (Kansas City Chiefs-football, Kansas City Royals-baseball, and Kansas Jayhawks-basketball), and politics (a big Trump supporter). Family members remember many times that her brother Gale would call her by all four of her names when he would greet her, Ramona May Elinor Phipps.
Ramona was very disappointed that she was not able to attend worship services in the last couple of years due to her weakened condition and she missed the singing and being together with other Christians.
