Morris Richard Perkins, Jr. (Rick) was born in Monroe, Louisiana on February 22, 1950, the second of eight children of Morris, Sr. and Rita Perkins. He will be remembered as a colorful character with a unique love for family and friends, a strong faith, and tireless work ethic. He died in his home on October 28, 2026, about 24 hours after giving his final haircut, surrounded by friends and family.
He served in the Army Signal Corps during the Vietnam War, earning a Soldier of the Month award during his deployment to Nha Trang. He was honorably discharged and from there began a long and fulfilling life of work and love of the outdoors.
He found great satisfaction in working for himself for more than 30 years. Depending on the day of the week, you could find him barbering in Park City or Moundridge, selling produce from the back of his red Nissan, tending to his garden, cutting and hauling firewood all across the state, or hunting and fishing in his “leisure” time. He was energized by a hard day’s work, and considered the barbershop his soapbox where he shared his many opinions and anecdotes. He was an active member of Church of the Resurrection community, and volunteered in numerous roles there, including choir member, PSR teacher, Eucharistic minister, and lector. No matter the nature of your encounter with Morris, you were guaranteed to feel something.
Morris is preceded in death by his parents and his grandson. Survived by his wife, Val; sons, Rusty Perkins and Marcus (Elizabeth) Perkins; daughter Ashley (Casey) Watkins; three granddaughters and one grandson; brothers Greg (Pat) Perkins, Hilary Perkins, Chris (Joanna) Perkins, Geoff (Trudie) Perkins, Jon (Mary) Perkins; sisters Andrea (Roger) McCoy and Michele (Ron) Graham, and many nieces and nephews.
