Mildred Maxine Kincaid was born in her parents' bedroom in a house just south of Mulvane Cemetery May 5, 1927. It was chilly that May so they had to bring the heating stove back out so the baby wouldn't be cold. Mildred was the 5th of 7 children of Ira and Opal Kincaid. She was welcomed by siblings Elizabeth, Robert, Arlene and Harold; Wayne and Gary would come along later. She grew up like most others of the time, in an old farmhouse with no running water or electricity. She attended a one room school house until going to Mulvane High School where she graduated in 1945. She was a typical farm girl helping with laundry, cleaning and cooking until her two older brothers went to the service in WWII and she got promoted to field hand. She mainly remembered all new words that her father taught her that he used outside that he didn't use in the house.
She married Robert Long on a snowy February 12, 1948 with just them, the preacher and their parents. They had 5 children Gordon, Barbara, Patti, Susan and Brad. She has 13 grandkids, 27 great grandkids and 1 great great grandchild. She worked for years at Long Equipment Company with her mother-in-law Jesse. She later worked 20+ years for Wellington Schools as director of food services. She was the first woman on the Mulvane City Council. She enjoyed gardening, baking, ceramics, quilting and family.
She was preceded in death by her parents Ira and Opal Kincaid, husband Robert Long, siblings Elizabeth Carlson, Robert Kincaid, Arlene Shaft, Harold Kincaid, and Wayne Kincaid, children Gordon Long and Susan Tate.
She is survived by brother Gary (Gail) Kincaid, and children Barbara Mayfield, Patti (Ron) Barscewski, Brad Long and all her grandkids.
A memorial has been established with the Mulvane Care and Share, 1014 N. 2nd Ave, Mulvane, KS 67110.
