Merle Eugene “Gene” Haynes, retired jig builder, was born in August of 1936 in Wichita to Arthur and Lela Haynes.
He was the oldest of three children and attended Wichita schools. He graduated from West High in 1955 and attended college at Wichita State University. Gene married Marcella Irvin in 1962, and they remained married until her passing in 2007. They had three children together and faithfully attended First Church of the Nazarene. In 2020, desiring in person fellowship, Gene became a member of Westview Baptist Church. He was loved by so many and was known for being good, kind, friendly and caring. Gene loved airplanes, cars and science fiction, but more than these he loved his Savior, Jesus. Gene connected with his beloved Lois Rose, and they became life partners until his passing on May 10, 2025.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Lela Haynes, his wife, Marcella Haynes, and his daughter Kimberly Haynes.
He is survived by his brother Gary (Carolyn) Haynes [Nebraska], sister, Joanna Sue Brickman [Wichita], sons, Kevin (Susanna) Haynes [Michigan], Kurtis (Susi) Haynes [Wichita]. Grandchildren, John (Jennifer) Haynes [Virginia], Joshua Haynes [Michigan], Jasmine Haynes [Michigan], Jonathan (Bethany) Haynes [Wichita], Jerrod (Lauren) Haynes [Oklahoma], Jordan Haynes [Wichita], and Jacob Haynes [Wichita]. He is also survived by five great grandchildren.
