Mercedes (Castro Garcia) Ellis, 87, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2026.
Born on February 26, 1939, in Madrid, Spain, Mercedes was the daughter of José and Eloisa Castro Garcia. She grew up in Madrid alongside her beloved brothers, Pepe and Miguel.
Mercedes met the love of her life, Max, while he was stationed at Torrejón Air Force Base near Madrid. What began as a chance meeting quickly blossomed into a lifelong love story. They were married on July 29, 1961, in Madrid, and together shared 65 wonderful years of marriage. To Max, she was always "Merche," the love of his life, trusted companion, and best friend.
Together they built a beautiful life and raised two children, Robert and Sandra. As a military wife, Mercedes embraced each new adventure with grace and resilience. Through moves across Louisiana, Oklahoma, Panama, California, Kansas, Spain, and Illinois, she created a loving home wherever life took their family. Following Max's retirement from the military, they made Wichita, Kansas, their permanent home.
Mercedes found joy in life's simple blessings: gathering around the table with family, sharing home-cooked meals, celebrating special occasions, and creating memories with those she loved. She especially treasured traveling, whether returning to Spain, celebrating her 50th birthday in Australia with her daughter, marking her 50th wedding anniversary on a Caribbean cruise, or attending her granddaughter's wedding in Mexico. Together, she and Max explored much of the United States and many countries across Europe, always happiest when making memories with family.
While she enjoyed seeing the world, Mercedes' greatest passion was never a place, but the people she loved. Her family's happiness was her life's purpose. She devoted herself completely to caring for her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her love was constant, unconditional, and unwavering. She never missed life's important moments. From school concerts and sporting events to graduations, birthdays, anniversaries, and weddings, Mercedes was always there, cheering from the sidelines, celebrating accomplishments, and offering encouragement.
To her family, Mercedes was the heart of the home. Her kindness, strength, patience, and generous spirit touched generations. The lessons she taught, the traditions she passed down, and the love she gave so freely will continue to live on in those fortunate enough to have known her.
Mercedes is survived by her loving husband, Max Ellis; her son, Robert (Stephanie) Ellis; her daughter, Sandra (Brett) Davis; her grandchildren, Zachary (Audrie) Ellis, Riley (Deavyn) Davis, Taylor (Patrick) Lang, and Cameron (Taylor) Davis; and her treasured great-grandchildren, Bo Davis, Rowan Lang, and Emilia Ellis.
Though her family grieves the loss of her physical presence, they take comfort in knowing that her love remains woven into the fabric of their lives. She leaves behind a legacy not measured in accomplishments or possessions, but in the countless lives she enriched, the family she nurtured, and the love she gave so selflessly every day.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 23, 2026, at Culbertson-Smith Mortuary, 115 S. Seneca St., Wichita, KS 67213.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mercedes' memory to the Sedgwick County Zoo
