It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Melvyn “Mel” Phillips, who departed this life on April 26, 2025, at the age of 87. Mel was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend, whose warmth, wisdom, and kindness touched the lives of all who new him.
Born on October 16, 1937, to Albert and Mary Phillips in Geddes, SD. Mel’s life was marked by over 40 years of excellent service as an over the road truck driver with Southwest Grease & Oil, along with excellence in caring for and supporting his loved ones. Mel loved hunting, fishing, traveling, car racing of any kind, and supported his local sports team by attending games and eating concession stand hot dogs.
He is survived by his wife Donna Phillips, his sister Betty King, his blended family of children Doug, Shelly, Becky, Judy, Jay, and Angie. Along with many Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren. Mel is loved and will forever be in our hearts.
Mel was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Mary Phillips, his late wife Shirley, sister Mary Ellen, and children, Dennis, and Fred.
A celebration of Mel’s life will be held at 2:00pm, May 9th at Smith Family Mortuary, 1415 N. Rock Road, Derby, KS 67037. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance and honor of a life well-lived.
