Melvin Siemens

November 19, 1929 — January 18, 2020

Melvin Siemens, 90, passed away Saturday, Jan. 18, 2020. He was born November 19, 1929 to Henry R and Martha (Ratzlaff) Siemens in Buhler, KS.

Melvin enjoyed playing basketball at Buhler High School on the team who became the 1947 State Basketball Champions. The team was inducted in the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame in 2006. Basketball, volleyball and tennis remained fun activities in his adult years.

Melvin and Verna Mae married May 17, 1952, and were married 60+ years. Their first adventure was to move to Denver, CO, where Melvin served in 1-W Service in a hospital. Following that, they answered an ad in a Mennonite publication by R.A. Graber, looking to shepherd a young farm family. After dairy and crop farming many years, Melvin "retired" to do over-the-road trucking. In 2012 the farm was sold and they moved to Wichita. He was living at Wichita Presbyterian Manor at the time of his death.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Verna Mae (Franz) Siemens. He is survived by his children, Byron (Brenda) Siemens, Karin (David) Koch, Sid Siemens; sister, Neva Siemens; grandchildren, Nathan (Shelby), Brandon, Seth and Aaron Siemens, Daniel (Amber) and Austin Hankins; and great-grandson, Wesley Siemens.

Memorial Service: Sat., Jan 25, at 3 pm at Kingman Mennonite Church, 1620 S. Main St, Kingman, KS 67068. Memorial contributions may be made to Wichita Presbyterian Manor, Kingman Mennonite Church, or Hope Mennonite Church in Wichita.
