Melvin Lee “Mel” Satterthwaite, age 86, retired repairman for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, and WWII and Korean War veteran, died Monday, October 10, 2011. Visitation 1-8 PM Thursday, October 13, 2011 with family receiving friends 6-8 PM, Culbertson-Smith Mortuary, 115 S. Seneca. Funeral service 10:30 AM Friday,October 14, 2011, West Side United Methodist Church, 1313 W. Lydia, where he was a faithful member. Graveside service 1:30 PM Friday, Udall(KS) Cemetery. Melvin was born to Ira & Emma (Ferguson) Satterthwaite, September 6, 1925 on the family farm near Udall. He married Velda Marquardt, July 16, 1949 at Winfield. He was active in Boy Scouts, a member of the Arthritis Water Exercise Club, and he donated land to The Sunflower Land Trust for The Satterthwaite Wildlife Preserve near Udall. “Mel” is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Max. Survivors: his wife; sons, Rex, of Bentley, and Scott (Mary Anne), of Topeka; sister, Dorothy Wells, of Udall; sister-in-law, Jolene Satterthwaite, of Wichita; his granddaughter, Lisa; and several nieces and nephews.
