Matthew Allen Bishop (Matt), 49, of Wichita, KS, died on the 5th of June, 2026. Born on February 13, 1977 in Orrville, OH, to Thomas Allen Bishop and Leah Lynn Schrock Bishop. Matt was known for his generous big heart. Matt loved BMX bike racing with Levi, playing guitar on the porch, his dog Mable, the Cleveland Browns, watching Levi play football, and going boating and fishing at many Kansas lakes in Walleye fishing tournaments. Matt participated in “Fishing Has No Boundaries” – an organization which gives handicapped folks an opportunity to boat and fish.
Matt was a devoted and loving father to Levi. Levi especially remembers his dad giving him a BMX bike for racing. They both competed in BMX races and won many trophies. Dryland and waterfowl hunting were important to Levi and Matt.
Faith was foundational to Matt. He attended Evidence Church and put his faith into action by how he treated others. Matt was outgoing and made friends with anyone. He shared his famous, amazing BBQ smoked chicken with neighbors, homeless and BMX buddies. Matt helped anyone in need.
More than any accomplishment or hobby, Matt was most proud of being Levi’s father. The two were rarely far apart, spending their time racing BMX, fishing, boating, watching football, and making memories together. Matt’s love for Levi was unwavering, and there was nothing he enjoyed more than watching his son grow, succeed, and find happiness.
Since 1999 (26+ years) Matt has worked for Kansas Gas Service. Work was important to Matt because of the people he worked with. He was dedicated and wouldn’t leave a job until it was done properly. Matt picked up mechanical skills easily and shared his talents with family and friends.
Matt’s unexpected death by heart attack has left a huge hole in our lives.
Matt is survived by father Tom (Joyce) Bishop of Leavenworth, KS, his mother Leah Bishop of Apple Creek Ohio; sister Sherri Bishop of Apple Creek, Ohio; his son Levi-Matthew Bishop and Levi’s half-brother Cole Emery; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Matt was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Whether he was on a BMX track, casting a line into the water, playing guitar on the porch, cheering from the football stand, or helping someone in need, Matt made people feel welcome and valued. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
