Marilyn Kay Karst

December 25, 1961 — April 13, 2025

Marilyn Kay Karst (Nelms), age 63, passed away on April 13, 2025, in Wichita, Kansas. Born on December 25, 1961, in Wichita, she lived a life marked by compassion, resilience, and unwavering dedication to others.

A proud graduate of Wichita North High School in the Class of 1979, Marilyn’s journey through life was one of continual growth and service. In the late 1990s, she earned her real estate license and later returned to school at Wichita Area Technical College to pursue her passion for caregiving by becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).

Marilyn began her professional career at the Wichita Bar Association before relocating to Illinois to continue similar work. She later transitioned into the banking industry, navigating several institutional changes with grace and adaptability. Her path eventually led her to the Sedgwick County Tag Office, where she formed lasting friendships that enriched her life. Marilyn then changed pace and joined the real estate world. Where she was part of the million dollar club and rookie of the year. She loved being able to help families find their dream home.

After taking time off to raise her two children—a role she cherished deeply—Marilyn returned to school and embarked on a new chapter in nursing. She devoted nearly a decade to hospice care, providing comfort and dignity to patients during their final days. Her commitment to helping others continued through her work with Catholic Charities in Wichita, where she supported homeless outreach programs and shelters until her retirement in December 2024.

Marilyn’s family was the heart of her world. She is lovingly remembered by her husband Kent Karst; daughter Elizabeth Karst; son Andrew Karst and daughter-in-law Tristan Karst; grandchildren Noelle Karst and Maxwell Karst; sister Martha Henry and brother-in-law Harvey Henry; half-sisters Julee Powers and Lorie Nelms; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother Phyllis Amsler; stepfather Raymond Amsler; grandmother Ann Haze; and grandfather Virgil Haze.

Marilyn found joy in life’s simple pleasures—gardening under the Kansas sun, singing along to country music whether at concerts or cruising down the road, and hosting lively gatherings for family and friends during holidays. Above all else, her grandchildren were her shining light. Her warmth made every room brighter, and those who knew her could always count on her selfless spirit.

Marilyn Kay Karst leaves behind a legacy of kindness and strength that will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her. May her memory bring comfort and peace to those who loved her.
