Douglass – Marjorie Lucille Bare, retired teacher, died January 25, 2012 at the age of 107 at Lakepoint Assisted Living in Augusta, Kansas. A memorial service will be held at 2pm Monday, January 30, 2012 at Douglass United Methodist Church, 204 S. Willow Douglass, KS with burial to follow in Douglass Cemetery. No visitation. Marjorie was born August 17, 1904, in the home of her parents, Luther and Bertha (Bally) Bare, who farmed four miles east of Douglass, Kansas. She graduated from Douglass High School in 1923 with a “Normal Training Certificate”. She received her Bachelor of Education degree from Emporia State College, with a Life Certificate and her Master of Education degree from Wichita University. She taught children in Douglass, Newton and Wichita school systems, mostly first grade at Ingalls, Adams and Fabrique. Marjorie said she chose teaching because of its many rewards. She had always loved children and found it a thrill to share the experience of learning to read; a thrill to the child, the parent and the teacher. While teaching, Marjorie took part in the City Teacher’s organizations, working on several curriculum and text book committees. She held office on both state and local levels in “Association for Childhood Education International”, and the Kappa Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. Her hobbies included knitting, cooking, reading and listening to classical music. She had traveled to all 50 states, Canada and Mexico. She spent seven weeks in Holland with side trips to France and Germany. Many of her most pleasant summers were spent in northern Montana on her niece’s ranch. Marjorie retired in 1969 and returned to Douglass. When asked for her goals and plans for the future, she said “At my age, one doesn’t have many big goals - I enjoy this time as much as any time of my life. I hope to keep my good health, be able to keep and enjoy my home and to be with family and friends.” She enjoyed being active in the Douglass United Methodist Church, where she served on many committees and renewed many old friendships. She was also involved in the building of the Douglass Senior Center. She was famous for making lemon pies for her church and the senior center. After living alone for many years and enjoying good health, Marjorie made the decision to move to Assisted Living in 2009. She appreciated the friendships of other residents and staff. Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Paul and Floyd; niece, Patricia Bare and nephew, Jim Bare. She is survived by her niece, Barbara Bare Weathered of Montana; 3 grandnephews; 2 grandnieces; many cousins and friends. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the church or to the Douglass Senior Center, 124 W. 4th St. Douglass, KS 67039. Arrangements with Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home, 507 S. Maple Douglass, Kansas 67039.
