Mabel Virginia Hirning, age 95, of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, died Saturday, January 30 in New Smyrna Beach. Born in Wichita, Kansas, she moved to New Smyrna Beach in 2010.
A graduate of Wichita State University, and active with its alumni association, Mrs. Hirning taught in Wichita Public Schools for 23 years. In Wichita, she was a member of Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church, a member of Cornelius for over 60 years, and was active with Project Beauty, which funded parks, landscaping, and sculpture to enhance the community. In New Smyrna Beach, she was a member of Coronado Community United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her daughter, Mary Maib and husband, David, of New Smyrna Beach; a grandson, Charles Maib of Tokyo, Japan; two nephews, Steve Neifing of Bella Vista, Arkansas, and Marc Neifing, of Moore, Oklahoma; and a niece , Karen Adams, also of Moore. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Frank Hirning.
Graveside funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 5th at Old Mission Cemetery, Wichita.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Southeast Volusia Humane Society, 1200 S. Glencoe Road, New Smyrna Beach, FL 32168 or the Kansas Humane Society, 3313 N. Hillside, Wichita, KS 67219.
