Schafer, Lulu Jean (Hutson), 94 was born September 17, 1925 in Turpin, Oklahoma and died September 12,2020 in Wichita, Kansas. She was the fourth of six children, an older brother, two older sisters and two younger brothers. She spent most of her growing up years in southeast Colorado, and recounted the stories of surviving the Dust Bowl with her family when she was young. Growing up she was very involved in the Friends Church in the youth ministries and helped with the founding of Camp Quaker Ridge in the Colorado Mountains. Mom's mother died when she was 15 yrs old and as her sisters left the home for school and marriage she took over the responsibilities of the household and raising her youngest brother. As a result her studies at Friends Bible College were cut short. When working at Fort Lyon, outside of Las Animas, Colorado, she and her best friend had a double date with two guys from Oklahoma which lead to a happy marriage and life time friendship for both couples. Most of her married life was in Oklahoma where 3 children were born and raised. In 2002 she and dad made the move to Wichita where they lived out their remaining years with family. She has been an important part of our life through the years and will be greatly missed. Memorials have been established with Friends of Kibimba Hospital, Africa c/o Evangelical Friends Ministry Center, 2018 W Maple, Wichita, KS 67213 or Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, 313 S Market St., Wichita, KS 67202.
