Kurt Brian McCune

Kurt Brian McCune, 62, passed away unexpectedly as the result of a sudden cardiac event on August 9, 2026. He was born April 11, 1964, in Wichita, Kansas to Jack and Jerene McCune. His death came far too soon, leaving behind a family who loved him deeply and a lifetime of stories, friendships, and memories that could never fit neatly into an obituary.

Music was one of the great loves of Kurt’s life. He played in multiple bands over the years including Mirror Mirror, Room Full of Walters, and others. It was through music that he found his way back to Loretta, whom he’d had a crush on back when they both attended Rose Hill High School. The two reconnected in 2002 while he was playing a show, and they were together ever since.

Kurt spent much of his career at McCune Heating and Air, his family’s business, before later moving to Amsco Supply when the company was sold. He was the heating and air pro through and through. Kurt was also known as the MacGyver of any situation, just like his dad, Jack, he was able to figure out and build just about anything, from complex HVAC systems to a full solar power setup he installed in his own home.

He was equally devoted to the water, which he said was where he felt closest to God. He and Loretta took a yearly trip to Table Rock Lake for the last 20 years, and he loved to sail, having just bought a new sailboat at Cheney Lake that he was thrilled about. In April, he and Loretta had taken a trip to the beach in Mexico together.

Above all, Kurt cherished being “Papa K” to his granddaughter, Briar.

Kurt is survived by his wife, Loretta; daughters, Jessica Williams and Dakota (Dillon) Rapp and granddaughter Briar; sister Denise (Paul) Fouse and brother Kendall (Kathy) McCune; 5 nephews, 2 nieces, and many great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Jerene, and his sister, Donita.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 22, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Rose Hill United Methodist Church, 19551 SW Butler Rd, Rose Hill, Kansas.
