Kerry Paul Shumaker

Sep 18, 1948 — Oct 15, 2026

Haysville

Kerry Paul Shumaker was born in Wichita, Kansas, on September 18, 1948, and died on October 15, 2026, in Derby, Kansas.

He graduated from Wichita South High School in 1966 and joined the U.S. Navy Reserves in January 1967. From September 1968 to September 1970, he had three tours of duty in Vietnam and Korea, sailing aboard the USS Higbee DD806 as a 3rd class torpedoman.

He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device (1960-), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea), and was eligible for the Silver Star Banner.

After being discharged from the Navy, Kerry attended Wichita Drafting College and earned his degree as an architect. While working as an architect, he decided it wasn't quite what he wanted and changed occupations to become a machinist. He worked at various machine shops in and around Wichita until about 1990, when he decided to open an upholstery shop. His theory was that he could build a hot rod and do everything except the interior, so he added that to his resume. He ran K & L Upholstery until 2010, when he finally decided to retire.

In what spare time he had, he enjoyed camping, fishing, riding his motorcycle, and working on model trains. He was an active member of the American Legion and the American Legion Riders.

Kerry married Linda Benson on August 29, 1969, in Wichita, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Pauline (Hain) Smith; Jerry and Kathy Shumaker; and his brother, Ted Victor Shumaker.
