Kay “Winnie” Hilger, age 70, passed away Tuesday, June 18, 2024 from complications from cancer.
She was born January 18, 1954 in Hillsboro, Kansas. She was a graduate of South High in Wichita, KS.
She worked at various truck lines as a typist and rate clerk for many years before making a career change to become an import customs broker. After retirement she dedicated her life to serving others in the homeless community, the disabled and the elderly.
A woman of many talents, her hobbies included woodworking, ceramics, antique collecting and quilting. She treasured her time serving and volunteering at Diversicare in Haysville, calling bingo, and making a multitude of friends and loved ones along the way. She delighted in baking dozens of cookies to serve to the residents which will surely be remembered and missed.
Kay “Winnie” was preceded in death by her parents, Lowell “Shorty” Rhodes and Marilyn Rhodes. She is survived by her husband of 12 years, Michael Habermehl; brothers Lowell “Lee” Rhodes and his wife Shirley, of Reno, NV, Lester “Pete” Rhodes and his wife Connie of Springfield, MO; niece Jenifer Szabo of California, nephews Brent Rhodes of Arkansas, Rick Rhodes of California, Luke Rhodes of Missouri, Adam Rhodes of Kansas; stepchildren Michael Habermehl of Kansas, Stacie George of South Carolina, Krystal Peck of Kentucky; six grandchildren.
Winnie displayed Jesus to everyone she came in contact with. She will be remembered for her smile, laughter, love, kindness, and generosity.
A memorial Celebration of Life will be held 10:00 am Saturday, July 20, at Prairie Trail Cowboy Church, 8552 S. Broadway, Haysville, Kansas.
