Shadid, Kathryn, 96, passed away Thursday, November 15, 2012, surrounded by her two loving children and her devoted caregivers and friends at Presbyterian Manor, where she had lived for the past 11 years. She now re-joins her husband of 30 years, Kamel Shadid, who died in 1981. Visitation 1-8 Sunday at Culbertson-Smith, 115 S. Seneca. Funeral service 10 am Monday at Presbyterian Manor Chapel, 4700 W. 13th, Wichita. Burial to follow at 1:00 at Dexter Cemetery. Born on January 12, 1916 in Torrington, WY, her parents were George and Mary David, who died in 1960 and 1968, respectively. She is survived by her two children: Mary Lou (Ken) Schuette of Wichita, and George (Lisa) Shadid of Kansas City, MO; four grandchildren: Doug Schuette of Atlanta, GA; Megan (Matthew) Bish; Claire Shadid of Kansas City (student at University of Notre Dame), and Benjamin Shadid of Kansas City. Kathryn spent her early years growing up and working in the family grocery businesses in Wyoming and Colorado, moving to Wichita in the late 1940s, upon the retirement of her parents. After her marriage in 1951, Kathryn moved to Dexter, KS, and with her husband raised their two children and joined the Shadid family in operating their grocery and general merchandise store. The “Shadid Store,” a local landmark in Dexter, was operated by the family – along with her in-laws Deeb and Lulu Shadid – until its sale after 50 years of operation in 1975. After their retirement, Kathryn and Kamel later relocated back to Wichita. Kathryn was a member of St. George Orthodox Cathedral. Through her years in Dexter, she was active in the local church, and was a member of Dexter Order of the Eastern Star. She always enjoyed her passions of gardening, sewing, and crocheting. During her time at Presbyterian Manor, she enjoyed participating in activities – especially Bingo and Rummikube, and was a member of the Red Hat Society. Until the end of her days, Kathryn continued to share her lifelong presence of friendliness, kindness and humor. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established with St. George Orthodox Cathedral, and Presbyterian Manor's Good Samaritan Fund.
