Joyce E. Unger, Mulvane, KS (82) beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt, passed September 19, 2021 in Wichita, KS. Born February 22, 1939, Wichita, to Mira Lee Pearson Miller Huffman and Harold Miller. Survived by husband, John P. Unger, children John W. Unger (Joan), Joanna Cowel (John), Joel Unger (Lorie), Jenny Koehn (Leon); 7 grandchildren, Jaqueline Johnson, Jodie Broekemeir, Jana Whitted, Michael Cowel, Caitlin Van Berkleo, Chase Kozak, Colt Koehn; 7 great-grandchildren, another great-granddaughter coming soon, her sister, Diana Morgan (Oregon), numerous loved nieces and nephews.
A 1956 graduate of Mulvane High School, Joyce and John were married June 1, 1956. As they raised four children together, she pursued her Bachelor’s and Master’s at Wichita State University in Piano Pedagogy with an emphasis in Performance. She truly enjoyed serving Jesus and her church as pianist and organist for 20+ years. It was her great passion to teach piano to many for over thirty-five years. She was well-known and respected among her colleagues in the area, and was past President of the South Central Kansas Music Teachers Association, the Wichita Area Music Teachers Association, and was pleased to have several students that participated in the National Guild of Piano Teachers competitions.
Visitation will be at Smith-Mortuary Mulvane, Sept. 23, 1 to 8 p.m., with Family present 5 to 7p.m. The Celebration Service will be Sept. 24, 10:00 a.m., at First Baptist Mulvane, followed by Graveside Service at El Paso Cemetery, Derby, KS. Memorials may be sent to First Baptist Church, 1020 N. 2 nd Ave., Mulvane, KS 67110 and to Good Shepherd Hospice, 7829 E. Rockhill, Ste 403, Wichita, KS.
