Joseph A. Matthews

Joseph "Joe" A. Matthews,loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away Friday, February 24, 2017 at the age of 74. Joe was born July 25, 1942 at Lake Itasca State Park in Minnesota to Stewart and Beatrice Lorang Matthews and raised in Bemidji, MN. He loved spending time with family and friends as well as fishing and hunting all over the country with his favorite fishing spot being Lake Texoma. Joe was the retired owner of A & W Plumbing. He moved to Wichita, KS in 1960 and stationed at McConnell AFB for four years. He met the love of his life, Violet "Butch" Lemon. They married August 13, 1962 and were blessed with two children. Survivors include his wife, Violet "Butch" Matthews; son, Donald L. Matthews; daughter, Carrie D. Huebert (Greg); grandson, Matthew J. Huebert (Teona); 3 great-granddaughters, Kensley, Adlee and Zoey Huebert; sister, Grace Watkins of Bemidji, MN; many other family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents; maternal grandparents, the Lorangs; brother, Herbert South; mother-in-law, Violet I. Lemon. Viewing: 2-5 Monday, Feb 27, Culbertson-Smith Mortuary, 115 S. Seneca, Wichita. Rosary: 7pm at Christ the King Catholic Church, 4411 W. Maple, Wichita. Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30am Tuesday, February 28, also at the church. Memorials established with Christ the King Church; St. Jude Children's Research; and Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice.
