John Patrick Unger passed away on December 14, 2024 at Azria Health, Wichita, Kansas. John was born March 17, 1937 in Ottawa, Kansas to John Earnest Unger and Alice Amelia (Godfrey) Unger. After the passing of his father, his mother remarried sometime later to William McKinley Miller, who became beloved “Dad” to John, his brother, and two sisters. On June 1, 1956, John married the love of his life, Joyce Ellen Miller. Together they raised four children. John enlisted in the U.S. Air Force on 8 August 1956 as a jet aircraft mechanic and transitioned to the Kansas Air National Guard in 1961. Demonstrating an exemplary, integrity driven work ethic and expert problem determination skills, he rose to attain the rank of Master Sergeant. John enjoyed a long and storied career, spanning 31 years of faithful and dedicated service to the nation he loved so well. MSgt John P. Unger retired honorably on 31 December 1987. After military retirement, John worked for Boeing Military Aircraft as an inspector in the program that produced two jets, still serving today, for transporting the President of The United States, and identified accordingly as “Air Force One.”
John is preceded in death by his Parents and Stepdad, his loving wife Joyce E. (Miller) Unger, sisters Mina (Unger) Blevins Methonen, Peggy (Unger) Bergen and brother Jessie. He is survived by his four children John W. (Joan), Joanna J. Cowel (John), Joel C. (Lorie) and Jennifer L. Koehn (Leon), seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, one great-grandchild on the way, and many other family and friends.
Visitation with the family at First Baptist Church Mulvane, 1020 N. Second Ave, Mulvane, KS on Thursday, December 19, 2024 from 9:00am - 10:45am and services beginning at 11:00am. Interment to follow at El Paso Cemetery, Derby, Kansas.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established with: Passageways, Ltd (assisting homeless veterans). Contributions, in the name of "MSgt John P. Unger (ret.)," can be made at the memorial service, through Passageways website: passagewaysltd.org , or mailed to: Passageways, Ltd., 2627 W Bennett Ave, Wichita, KS 67217.
The Unger family would also like to extend their deep appreciation to the staff of Azria Health Wichita for the loving care they provided to John over these last 3 ½ years.
