John Henry Steadman

John H. Steadman, Jr., 86, died Sunday, September 25, 2016, surrounded by his loving family.


John was born on July 22, 1930, in Cottonwood Falls, Kansas, to John and Mary Steadman. At age 20, John eloped and married 16 year old Virginia "Gig" Mott, in Council Grove, Kansas on June 26, 1951. John and Virginia had seven children: Debra, Trudy, Cheri, Greg, Kevin, Tani, and Kyle. John and Virginia were married 61 years. John served his country fighting in the Korean War. He worked 45 years for the Santa Fe Railroad from June 18, 1948 until June 18, 1993.


John is preceded in death by his wife Virginia, children Cheri and Kevin, his parents, and brother Jim. He is survived by daughter Debra Paulsen and husband Larry, of Victorville, California; daughter Trudy Boyer and husband Dennis of Mulvane; son Greg Steadman and wife Kelly of Derby; daughter Tani Schule of Mulvane; son Kyle Steadman and wife Shelly of Mulvane; granddaughter Taryn Shively and her husband Steve of Mulvane; grandson Eric Paulsen and wife Kelly of Rancho Santa Margarita, California; granddaughter Angela Lake and husband Chris of Hobson, Texas; grandson Jared Steadman and his wife Amy of Derby; grandson Drew Steadman of Wichita; grandson Austin Steadman of Derby; 12 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.


Visitation 3-8 p.m. Wednesday, with the family greeting friends from 5-8 p.m.; funeral service 9:30 a.m. Thursday, September 29, both at Smith Family Mortuary, 1415 N. Rock Rd., Derby. Burial will be in Bazaar, Kansas Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established with Mulvane High School Booster Club and the American Heart Association.
