John was a Golden Gloves Light Heavyweight Boxing Champion, a college football player, and the 1981 URA Steer Wrestling Champion. He was a talented singer and guitarist, and he loved a good horse. One of John’s favorite careers was training racehorses. He especially loved training horses that were owned by his brothers Steve and Danny. Steve owned a horse named Kayois and under John’s training that horse went on to win the 1985 Nebraska Open Derby Champion and Three-Year-Old Horse of Meet and Kansas Three-Year-Old Horse of Year. Another horse, named Still A Fast Man set a 2006 track record at Prairie Meadows Racetrack which was owned by his brother Danny Moses. Out of all the horses that John trained, and owned Snooper Charger was his favorite. Snooper Charger set the track record at Custer County Fair Ground that will never be broken. After John, retired, he began driving a school bus. He drove for the Derby School District for 8 years and he thoroughly enjoyed the kids and his job.

John met the love of his life at the 4th of July rodeo in Cimarron, New Mexico. He was riding around wearing his blue Superman t-shirt and saw a young woman pushing cattle up the arena. He rode up to her and shook her left hand when he introduced himself to make sure she was single. From that day on, John and Kay were inseparable and for 43 years enjoyed owning horses, roping, and going to church together.

John was a faithful member of Bridgeport Missionary Baptist Church for almost his entire life. John led his family, and they sang specials while playing the guitar. He often volunteered to help with different construction projects around the church, and if there was concrete to be poured, he was involved.

John was the kind of guy that would literally give you the shirt off his back. He enjoyed helping people and loved to mentor the younger generation in the sport of rodeo and watch his kids and grandkids compete in rodeo and their school sports. He was a board member of the Mulvane Rodeo Arena for years and was a fixture at the arena. John was not afraid to show his family and friends how he felt. He had a generous heart and he loved big.
