Loeb, John David, 76, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, April 19, 2015, due to heart complications. Husband to Shirley (Smith), father to Tracy and Susan, grandfather to Brandon, Gabriel, Samuel and Jacob, and father-in-law to Lisa and Eduardo. John graduated from North Eastern State University, after which, he and his wife pursued teaching careers in Wichita and Udall, Kansas. He later switched careers and spent 20 years as a locomotive engineer with Union Pacific RR while simultaneously writing and publishing books for children and raising horses. He had a deep love for the country and nature. His two favorite places were the Kansas Flint Hills and Custer State Park in South Dakota. He also dearly loved his family and telling good stories with his Tuesday morning coffee group. A Memorial Gathering to celebrate his life will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Friday, April 24, at Smith Family Mortuary, 1415 N. Rock Rd., Derby.
