John "Mr. Volvo" Cox

Wichita - Cox, John Jr. (“Mr. Volvo”) age 86, passed away February 2, 2018. He was born August 27, 1931 to John and Lola (Baker) Cox in Chanute, Kansas. John grew up around the Fall River and Severy area. John served in the Army from January 1952 to December 1953. John was united in marriage to Evelyn Joan Knight, June 19, 1952 in Eureka, Kanas. To this union a son Johnny Ray and daughter Janet Renee were born. John and Evelyn moved to Wichita, Kansas in 1957. John was devoted to family, friends and Volvo’s. John was fondly referred to as “Mr. Volvo” because of his lifelong passion with cars especially Volvo’s. John worked all of his adulthood for Gorges Volvo Family until he retired in 2002. Over his career years, John was mechanic, parts manager, service manager and the acknowledged Volvo guru. “Mr. Volvo” had many devoted customers over the years because of attentiveness to detail and quality service. During his 55 years of Volvo service “Mr. Volvo” had many memorable career experiences. Few of the most memorable ones that stood out were traveling to Sweden to see how Volvo’s were made, having an article published in the Wichita Business Journal titled “Goodbye, Mr. Volvo” September 13, 2002 and being presented with a brand new White Volvo XC70 with a big red bow on the hood with the license plate stating “Mr. Volvo” presented at his 2002 retirement party. Visitation 1-8pm, with family greeting from 5-7pm Thursday evening; Funeral 10am Friday, February 9th, both at Culbertson-Smith Mortuary, 115 S. Seneca in Wichita. Graveside service will be held at South Lawn Cemetery in Severy, Kansas at 1pm directly following the funeral service. He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Lola Cox; wife, Evelyn; brother, Virgil Cox. John is survived by his children, Johnny (Betty) Cox, Janet (Scott) Jensen; grandchildren, Dedra (Josh) Straka, Derrick Metzger, Dustin Metzger, Michael (Ronalyn) Jensen; great-grandchildren, Adrienne, Julienne, Trevor, Samantha, Johnathon, Marion, Emmalyn; sisters, Mildred Ward, Sue Sprague; and a loving extended family. In lieu of flowers, a memorial is with Good Shepherd Hospice, 7829 E Rockhill St #403, Wichita, KS 67206.
