Jerry Douglas Calkins, 83, passed away Monday, February 9, 2026. He was born to Alva and Phoebe (Rust) Calkins on May 13, 1942, in Gordon, Nebraska. His family moved several times during his early years but ultimately found work and a home in Hot Springs, South Dakota. He attended primary, middle, and high school there in Hot Springs. Jerry attended Chadron State College in Chadron, Nebraska, where he received a bachelor's degree in Education.

Jerry met Karen while attending Chadron State College, and they were married on June 11, 1967. They made their home in Sunnyside, Washington, until he entered the Air Force in November of that year. His career became that of an Air Force Chaplain's Assistant. He served his country for 20 years in that capacity until he retired from the Air Force. After retiring, he worked for many years in Civil Service at McConnell AFB.

Jerry enjoyed traveling, sightseeing, and the many experiences that the Air Force provided for him and his family. He loved being a father and enjoyed doing things with his children. He also enjoyed making things for his family and working outside in his yard. He was an avid reader and enjoyed history.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Ronald Calkins.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Karen; daughter, Dee; son, Jasen (Oregon); and sister, Donna (Lyle) Rayburn (Washington).

A memorial service will be held at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery, 1208 North College Street, Winfield, KS 67156, at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 30, 2026.
