James Allen Sumner

James Allen Sumner, retired software engineer, passed away Friday, December 9, 2016. Visitation at Smith Family Mortuary, 1415 N. Rock Rd., Derby, 1-8 p.m. Monday, with family present 4-6 p.m. Funeral service 10 a.m. Tuesday, at South Rock Christian Church, 900 S. Rock Rd., Derby. James was a drafting teacher at Derby High School until he started working at Cessna in 1965. He retired from Cessna in 1994. He spent his retirement doing woodworking projects and other service projects, as he was a mission-minded man with a servant's heart. He will be remembered as a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, friend, and servant of God. He and his wife Alice were members of the First Christian Church/South Rock Christian Church for 58 years. He is survived by Alice; children Cindy (Mark) Wiltse, Marc (Cathy) Sumner; grandchildren Blair and Tyler Sumner, Kristi and Caleb Wiltse; great-granddaughter Isabella Sumner; and brother-in-law Roy Jennings. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Pl., Memphis, TN 38105-9959 and with IDES, P.O. Box 379, Noblesville, IN 46061.
