Derby - Pouncey, James Michael (Mike)

James Michael Pouncey, age 66, passed away December 25, 2024. He was born November 20, 1958 to Alfred Herbert Pouncey and Emajoe (Duncan) Pouncey in Wichita, Kansas.

Michael was married to the love of his life, Sandra Jo (Taylor) Pouncey, on April 12, 1986. They were married 38 wonderful years and were blessed to have been together for 44 years. Mike, as he was called by friends and family, was known for his wit, his openness, and his love of jokes and lively conversation. He was an entertaining storyteller and an ornery weaver of amusing tall tales. His smiles were infectious and his laughter would fill the room! Mike was an aficionado of musical theater and loved to sing along with his favorite songs, a trait shared by his parents and siblings. His mother and beloved Grandma Grace nurtured this love in their children and the family spent many happy hours singing together. Mike and Sandra continued the tradition by attending the Music Theatre of Wichita for 30 years.

A generous, kind, loving, patient, and thoughtful man, Mike was loved by everyone. The role in life he cherished, and of which he was the proudest, was of being “Uncle Mike” to his many nieces and nephews. He was the fun uncle, enthusiastically and actively supporting them in their lives. In addition, he was tremendously talented and creative, pursuing activities such as drawing, arts and crafts, needlework, calligraphy and cooking. He loved braiding his nieces’ hair and painting their fingernails.

Michael retired from Boeing and Spirit Aerosystems in 2020. He was also a proud member of the Masons.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Alfred Herbert "Herb" and Emajoe Duncan Pouncey; siblings, Thressa Leanne Griffin, Timothy Eugene Pouncey, and Tim’s wife Naomi Johnson.

Michael is survived by his wife Sandra Jo (Taylor) Pouncey of Derby and his sister Melinda Denise Pouncey of Beaumont, Texas

Memorial Service: 2:00 pm, Thursday January 2, 2025 at Smith Family Mortuary 1415 North Rock Road Derby, Kansas 67037. Interment to follow at Littleton Cemetery in Mulvane.
