James R. Middendorp

January 22, 1951 — December 17, 2024

James Middendorp, 73, unexpectedly passed away on December 17, 2024. Jim (Jimmy, Big Jim, Fuzzy) called several places home during his life, including Michigan, Virginia, and Costa Rica. He was known for his dedication to his work in law enforcement and the security sector, where he made a lasting impact.


Jim honorably served his country in both the United States Air Force and Navy, demonstrating his strong sense of duty and commitment to service. After his military career, Jim continued working in the security field, earning the respect of colleagues and friends alike for his professionalism, integrity, and steadfast dedication.


While Jim made Costa Rica his home, he returned to the United States each year to visit family and friends. His connections to Michigan and Kansas were cherished, and he formed lasting bonds wherever he lived. Jim had many friends in Costa Rica who were instrumental in helping the family with arrangements from afar. Lofty and Randy will always be appreciated for their unwavering friendship and the support they provided during this difficult time, bridging the international divide with compassion and care.


He was preceded in death by his father, Jacob Middendorp; his brother, Thomas Middendorp; and his brother-in-law, Randy Nordman.


Jim is survived by his mother, Roberta Middendorp; his son, James Middendorp (Dara); his daughter, Angela Welch (Matt); his son, Tyler Ly; his daughter, Ashley Lynema (Matt); his brother, Bob Middendorp (Karen); his sister, Deb Middendorp-Nordman; his former spouse, Fran Wagner; Nephews, Matt Kaminski (Emily) Jake Nordman; Steven Middendorp (Brooke) ,Nieces; Sarah Holford (Mike), Heather Rone (Allen); 12 grandchildren and many Friends.


Funeral is 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 6, 2024 at Smith Smith Family Mortuary, 1415 N. Rock Road, Derby, KS. A celebration of life will follow the memorial service from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at 2037 W. 103rd St S, Peck, Kansas. A memorial service will also be held in his hometown at a later date.


In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Kansas Honor Flight or Mid-Michigan Honor Flight to honor Jim’s military service.


A life well lived. Jim’s life was one of service, friendship, and love. He will be remembered fondly for his warmth, humor, and devotion to his family and friends.
