James S. Kates

James Samuel Kates, 84, of Haysville, died June 8, 2022 at his home.

Born January 3, 1938 in Chester, Pennsylvania, the son of Robert A. and Camilla M. (Shown) Kates. He served with the United States Air Force, and retired as a Final Assembler from Cessna Aircraft. He was married to Lawana Martin on October 8, 2005 in Haysville.

Survivors include his wife, Lawana Martin; son James (Serena) Kates of Wichita; daughters Jeanette (Roger) Bloom and Diana (Marvin) Bruffett of Haysville; stepsons Greg Martin of Haysville, Michael (Linda) Martin of Kansas City, and David (Lori) Martin of Lakeland, FL; grandchildren Jared, Becky, Laura, Susanna, Allena, Alyssa; four step-grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife Violet, his parents, and four siblings.

Visitation 4-8pm Tuesday, June 14 at Smith Mortuary in Haysville. Funeral Service 10am Wednesday, June 15 at the Haysville United Methodist Church, followed by military honors at Greenwood Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with Heartland Hospice.
