Kersting, Henry Frederick “Fred”, Jr., 88, passed away Friday, September 18, 2015. He was born July 29, 1927 to H.F. and Frances (Shockey) Kersting, Sr. in Wichita, KS. Fred served his country in the Navy during WWII, then the Air Force during Korea, and later retired as a Naval Reservist. He also retired from Cessna Aircraft after 25 years of service. Fred was the last of the original 13 volunteer firefighters in Derby. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite and Midian Shrine. He enjoyed volunteering as a driver transporting children and their families to Shriners Hospitals for Children in St. Louis, MO.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Donald H. Kersting; and brothers, Donald, Herman, Jack, and Berton. Fred is survived by his children, Kevin (Rendi) Kersting, Linda Kersting, Laura Kersting, Brian (Linda) Kersting, Lori Kersting, David Kersting, and Lisa (Calvin) Crittenden; sister-in-law, Marilyn Kersting; 20 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
Visitation: Tuesday, from 1 to 8 pm with family present between 5 and 7 pm at Smith Family Mortuary, 1415 N. Rock Rd., Derby, KS 67037. Funeral: 2 pm, Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at the First Presbyterian Church, 324 N Baltimore Ave, Derby, KS 67037. Interment to follow at El Paso Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, 4400 Clayton Ave., St. Louis, MO 63110.
