Harold "Sonny" E. Rickards, Jr.

Harold “Sonny” E. Rickards, Jr. of Derby, Kansas passed away Monday, August 23, 2021. Visitation: 4-6 PM August 29 at Smith Family Mortuary of Derby, KS. Funeral Service: 10:00 AM August 30 at Pleasantview Baptist Church in Derby, KS; Graveside Services will be held at 1:30 PM at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery in Winfield, KS.

Sonny served in the U.S. Army as an officer for 31 years. After retirement, he went to seminary and served 12 years as a Veterans Affairs Chaplain. Sonny was a long time Gideon and was active in the church.

Sonny was preceded in death by his parents Harold E. Rickards, Sr. and Berneice D. Alcaraz, his sisters Beverly A. Rickards and Crystal D. Grossman, and his brother Nathan O. Alcaraz. Sonny is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ila J., his son Stewart I. L., granddaughter Ruby M. and two grandsons Matreya X., Malechi S., his sisters Dorthey E. Baker and Aleta D. Garza , his brothers Danny L. Rickards, Henry G. Alcaraz, Jr., and Gary L. Alcaraz and nieces and nephews.
