Jacoby, James Harold, was born August 29, 1918 to Henry Jacoby and Myrtle Bing Jacoby in Butler County. He grew up on a farm, going to school on horseback. During the depression, he left school to work to help support his parents and sister. He graduated from Douglass High School with the Class of 1938. The delay in his schooling resulted in Hazel Davenport, the girl next door who he married, graduating before he did. She delighted in telling people that she had to wait until he grew up before marrying him. They married on December 31, 1939, and had their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1989. After a happy marriage that produced two sons, Dick and Larry, Hazel died on April 14, 1998. His early jobs were delivering ice, and later, milk. He then went into the Army, and spent a year in the occupation troops in Japan. After leaving the Army, he delivered gasoline, owned a mechanics/blacksmith shop in Smileyberg, and then worked in the oil field. He was active in the Masonic Lodge, and various camper clubs. He married Dorothy King on February 13, 1999. Dorothy preceded him in death. He is survived by two sons: Dick Jacoby of Ocracoke, North Carolina; and Larry Jacoby of St. Louis, Missouri. Also, he is survived by Dorothy's daughter, Cecilia Morse, who he thought of as being his own daughter; and by two grandchildren, Derek Jacoby and Karin Lenigan, and two great-grandchildren, Rebecca and Shannon Lenigan. Visitation Sunday 4-6 p.m. at Smith Mortuary, 7031 S. Broadway, Haysville. Funeral service 11:00 a.m. Monday, at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 7901 W. 21st St., Wichita. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established with the church. He was greatly loved and is badly missed.
