Gordon Thomas “Tom” Sanders Jr., 82, of Wichita, Kansas, passed away on May 7, 2026. He was born on May 26, 1943, in Columbia, South Carolina.
Tom proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, a path that ultimately brought him to Wichita, Kansas, where he built a life rooted in family, friendship, and simple joys. It was there he met the love of his life, Verla, and they shared many years together until her passing in 2017. When Tom became part of the family, Verla’s children were already grown, and he became a steady and caring stepfather in their lives.
He found great happiness in the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting, and he also enjoyed competitive shooting. One of his most cherished friendships was with his longtime friend Cecil, with whom he shared over 40 years of memories.
Tom was a devoted stepfather, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his stepchildren, Jonathan, James (Danielle), and Johnna; seven grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his younger brother, his beloved wife Verla, and his great-granddaughter, Karsyn.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, May 14, 2026, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Smith Mortuary in Haysville, Kansas. A graveside service will be held on Friday, May 15, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Greenwood Cemetery in Wichita,
Tom will be remembered for his quiet strength, his love of the outdoors, and the deep care he had for his family and friends. Above all, his family will always remember his parting words to his grandchildren: “Be good.” His presence will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
