William "Gary" Kuntz was born July 3, 1943 in Wichita, Kansas to Fred and Maxine (Shroder) Kuntz and passed away in Mulvane, Kansas on February 28, 2026.
Gary graduated from Mulvane High School in 1961 and went on to spend 37 years teaching math in Ottawa, Kansas, where he eventually became Head of the Math Department. Even after retiring, he wasn't done teaching. He spent another 20 years as a substitute teacher at Circle High School in Towanda, as well as in Rose Hill, Douglass, and Augusta, Kansas, continuing to do what he loved - being in the classroom and making a difference. His students knew him best as "Mr. KU," a nickname that fit him perfectly as a proud and loyal Jayhawk fan.
He coached basketball and was a dedicated part of the Babe Ruth Baseball program for 50 years, serving more than 20 years as commissioner. He poured his heart into youth sports and was deeply committed to the kids and families in his community. He was also actively involved in the Renaissance Program at Ottawa High School and spent many hours volunteering with Muscular Dystrophy telethons.
He was a loving brother and uncle, very involved in his community, and truly loved by his students. Teaching wasn't just his job, it was who he was. His impact will be felt for generations by the many young people he encouraged, coached, and inspired.
Survived by his brother Steve Kuntz; sister Barbara (Mark) Hardison; nieces, Jaime Hardison, Jessi (Jeremy) Hall; numerous great nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Maxine Kuntz; brother, Dennis Kuntz.
