Frank David Hancock born July 17, 1941, succumbed to a long battle with Parkinson’s disease on October 27, 2023. Frank is preceded in death by his father Richard Hancock (Derby KS), mother Dema Hancock Mahoney (Derby KS), brothers Joe Hancock (Olathe KS), and 2 infant brothers. He is survived by his wife of more than 62 years, Ludwina Hancock, children Julie Hancock Gile, Mike (Tamra), Richard (Carol); grandchildren Austin and Alysha Hancock, Alexis and Quinn Shanbour, Chad and Jacqualyn Gile, Tina and Joe Hessman, Jessica Gile, Morgan and Kyle Coronado, Libby Hancock, Jesse Hancock; brother Bill Hancock, sister Mary Kay Mitchell; numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and their families.
Frank grew up working at Hancock Orchards and he graduated from Derby High School in 1959. Following high school, he attended college in Emporia before joining the US Air Force. Frank was the owner and operator of Hancock Excavating for more than 50 years. His expertise in construction and excavation improved the lives of thousands of homeowners in Kansas and Oklahoma. Passing along his trade to his children, Frank leaves a legacy for years to come. Frank was always looked at as a man’s man. Calloused hands, denim jeans, work boots and a smile led him to the job sites every day, rain or shine. Frank could build or repair any piece of equipment required for the job. He loved equipment, heavy trucks and helping those in need. You would often find him operating the equipment with a grandchild in his lap. He loved to share his passion with all who knew him. He believed in his mind that he was still working up until his last breath. On his final day, he believed he was delivering an end dump full of rock to a job site.
Outside of work, Frank enjoyed hunting, fishing, and trap shooting, passing these traits to his children. He also relished in moments when he was able to travel with friends and family. He and Ludwina traveled extensively, including going on many cruises and visiting several countries.
Frank was a member of the Derby Church of Christ where everyone knew and loved his greetings. He could be found clearing snow from the parking lot before anyone even woke up and when no one should be outside. Frank leaves a lasting impression with all who knew him, especially his children and grandchildren.
