Frances Sutton Tierney Renfro, 88, died November 11, 2018, in Douglass, Kansas. She was born August 3, 1930 to Homer and Mary Scott Sutton at Douglass Kansas. After a move from Kansas to Montana, then Seattle, where she would eventually be mom to nine kids and build a very happy life in Washington. Frances married her first love J Keith Tierney in Winfield on June 17, 1950. He died in 1988. After his death, she returned to Douglass to care for her mother. While there, she reconnected and married John Renfro in Douglass on Jan. 1, 1993. He died in 2010. She was also preceded in death by one son, Michael Tierney, a sister, Helen Louise Sutton and her brother, John (Bud) Sutton. Her third love was the Douglass Pioneer Museum. Always interested in genealogy and history, her return to Douglass gave her an opportunity to become involved with the museum. She became a resource for people around the country seeking their roots in Butler County. Frances is survived by her eight children, Scott (Melanie) Tierney, Portland, OR; Bridget Tierney, Seattle, WA; Maureen (Roland) Haruta, Seattle, WA; Mary “Margie” Kelly, Seattle, WA; James Tierney, Seattle, WA; Timothy (Joanne) Tierney, Seattle, WA; John Tierney, Seattle, WA; Joseph (Mary) Tierney, Seattle, WA; and two nieces, Shawnna (Mike) Kaufman, Kingman, KS, and Shelley Sutton, Topeka, KS; twelve grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She also had four step-children: Daniel Renfro, Hesston, KS; Shirley Haden, St. Paul, MN; Michael (Laura) Renfro, Randolph, KS and Greg (Stephanie) Renfro, Wichita, and 10 step-grandchildren.
A casual memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, November 28, 2018 at the Douglass Senior Center, 124 W. 4th St. Douglass, KS 67039 with Rev. Cindy Watson officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Douglass Pioneer Museum, P.O. Box 95, Douglass, KS 67039 or to the Douglass Senior Center.
