Ferne N. Gilmore, 99, passed away on Friday, August 17, 2018 in Wichita, KS. She was born in Columbus, KS on January 7, 1919 to Andrew and Stella McComak. She graduated from Independence High School, Independence, KS with class of 1938. She married Bill Gilmore on December 7, 1938 at Independence.
Three sons were born to this union. Bill and Ferne were married 72 years. Bill died in 2010. The Gilmores resided in Russell from 1961-1969. During this time in addition to being wife and mother, she worked as a nurse aide at the Russell Hospital. She was a lifetime member of the VFW Womens Auxillary Post #6240 of Russell. One of Ferne’s favorite pastimes was bowling. She and Bill bowled in leagues for many years. She continued to bowl until age 95.
Survivors include her 3 sons and families: Jim (Darlene) of Derby and children, Michael, William (Tina) and Lesley (Jim) Eliasen; Lloyd (Cindy) of Derby and children Russ (Laura) and Colby; Andy (Carleen) and children Jamie (Elizabeth) Gilmore, Vanessa Riebli and Daniel Reling. Great grandchildren include Morgan (Tarent Tevis)) Arnce; Adin, Lydia and Lincoln Gilmore; Logan Gilmore; Cade Fowler; and Eli and Parker Reling along with special niece Peggy Helmkamp and nephews Jack, Jerry and Bob McCormick, and other family and friends.
